2010 Charles E. Swope Scholarship AwardThe Chester County Bar Foundation has established the Charles E. Swope Scholarship Award to provide financial assistance for post-high school education of a student interested in pursuing a career in law or a law related field.
Criteria for SelectionApplicants for the Award must demonstrate academic excellence, wide ranging extracurricular activities, leadership, dedicated community service and an interest in and intent to pursue a career in law or a law related field.
EligibilityTo be eligible, an applicant must be a citizen of the United States and a permanent resident of Chester County. In addition, an applicant must be enrolled in high school as a junior or senior. The Foundation scholarship committee may consider unique factors identified on the application form, such as financial need, in making the Award.
AwardThe Foundation will provide one scholarship having a value of three thousand ($3,000.00) dollars to the Award winner. Payment of the scholarship shall be made directly to the successful applicant’s college or university.
Matching GrantIn addition to providing the scholarship amount to the Award winner, the Bar Foundation will also provide a matching grant in the amount of three thousand ($3,000.00) dollars to one of the below listed non-profit Chester County community organizations selected by the Award winner:
- Crime Victims’ Center of Chester County (“CVCCC”) - CVCCC provides two twenty-four (24) hour hotlines as well as a range of free supportive services to Chester County victims of sexual assault and other crimes including explanations of the legal process and accompaniment through criminal proceedings. Programs to schools and community groups are offered to reduce victimization.
- Domestic Violence Center of Chester County (“DVCCC”) - The mission of the DVCCC is to provide programs and advocacy to prevent, reduce and remedy domestic violence. Among the free services provided, DVCCC offers wide-ranging legal services and shelter to battered Chester County women and children.
- Legal Aid of Southeast Pennsylvania (“LASP”) - LASP provides free civil legal services to low-income persons and victims of domestic violence in Chester County. Most of the work that LASP does is of an emergency nature. The areas of law in which LASP provides services include housing, consumer protection, family, welfare, social security and unemployment.
Each of the eligible organizations in some manner furthers the mission of the Foundation to help Chester County citizens understand, gain access to and benefit from our legal system. The Foundation will provide the scholarship award recipient the honor of selecting the beneficiary of the matching grant in further recognition of the recipient’s proven dedication to benefit others through community service.
